It seems that Sam Bennett’s Giro d’Italia has not only put a smile on his face but also one lucky young fan who received a special present from the Irishman.
Following his stage seven win against the race’s top sprinter, Elia Viviani, in Praia a Mare, Bennett was clearly in a good mood despite having to tackle 209km up the mountains the following day.
With rain lashing down it would easy for the peloton to focus on getting over the lumps as they rode from Praia a Mare to the summit finish at Montevergine di Mercogliano.

However, one family were chanting for riders to give their boy, Marco, a bidon and as the riders slowly passed them by it looked like it wasn’t going to happen until Bennett came along.
Posting to Facebook, Valentino Fontana recorded the moment as the sprinter peeled off from the Grupetto as they edged closer to the finish and handed his team issued Bora-Hansgrohe bidon to the young fan making his day.
The video is a long one with the action starting around the 6 minute mark but it’s definitely worth a watch just to see the reaction of the young fan whose day is made by the rider’s kind gesture.
